COMMENTS This unusual tourmaline has a chocolate coloured body tone with a reddish tint to each end when rotated, which is not visible in the photos. Its colour resembles that of a chocolate diamond. The stone is well cut, bright and eye-clean. Today, the world’s major sources of tourmaline are Brazil, many parts of Africa, Asia, Sri Lanka, India and Australia.
DURABILITY Tourmaline has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 and is more susceptible to scratches than a diamond or sapphire. Its toughness is fair, and it is durable enough for daily wear as long as the setting is protective. Tourmaline is generally stable to light and isn’t affected by chemicals, however, heat can damage it and sudden temperature change can cause fracturing. Do not use an ultrasonic for cleaning tourmaline, instead use warm, soapy water.
